The strongest magic mushrooms in the entire world (with what we know today as of this writing) are undeniably Amanita pantherina. Now, many people are not entirely familiar with this mushroom, likely only being familiar with the genus [Amanita] it belongs to instead. This genus is what “Amanita muscaria” belongs to, the classic red-cap mushrooms with white warts that has been widely popularized in folklore and popular culture (think Super Mario Brothers). Well, Amanita pantherina contains the same psychedelic compounds (ibotenic acid and muscimol) with ibotenic acid being a prodrug to muscimol.
This indeed varies greatly from what many would label “magic mushrooms”, with that term usually being designated for Psilocybe cubensis, and other psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Many people are under the impression that these mushrooms, and even more specifically what are known as “pan cyan (Panaeolus cyanescens)” are the strongest magic mushrooms, with psilocybin contents as high as “2.5% [psilocybin] and psilocin at 1.194%” according to Wikipedia. Psilocybe cubensis has psilocybin contents of “0.4%-1.35%” and this is also according to Wikipedia, with dry weight of the caps being used to determine the findings.
Well, let's instead redirect our focus away from psilocybin or psilocin, at least for the moment, and focus on muscimol and ibotenic acid. Amanita muscaria, and other muscimol-containing mushrooms have the highest concentrations of these compounds in the cap, much like psilocybin-containing mushrooms. The distinct and usually bright color of the cap (besides Amanita pantherina which is a dark brown, instead of a bright red or yellow/orange) are possibly associated with the active psychedelic compounds themselves, likely nature's way of giving a fair warning of the magic (and potential toxicity). This too is a lot like psilocybin-containing mushrooms, as psilocybin is known to cause the mushrooms to bruise a deep blue color.
So in fact, these magic mushrooms have many similarities with each other, yet also many differences. Many people have been referring to Amanita muscaria and similar muscimol-containing mushrooms as the “Delta-8 of Magic Mushrooms” and this is in large part due to their legal status, which they are federally legal and legal in every state besides Louisiana. So just how Delta-8 was considered basically legally marijuana, these are legal magic mushrooms — but with a little bit more of a risk. Amanita muscaria (and Amanita pantherina and other similar mushrooms) are technically poisonous, so I try to never fully recommend anybody eat them. That being said, I will also never recommend not eating them. I will simply highlight their good (and sometimes bad) qualities.
An Amanita muscaria poisoning would typically result in stomach problems, nausea, vomiting, sweating etc. But in more severe cases (e.g large amounts of fresh mushrooms consumed, underlying health issues etc.) severe side effects can occur, including seizures and in extremely rare cases, possibly death. As of this writing I'm not entirely sure of any fatalities linked to psilocybin mushrooms, minus of course the crazy person who jumps from a building or whatever, but I mean a true poisoning I'm not sure. I'll research that a bit, perhaps, and may provide an update to the article. But the point of the article is to highlight the strongest magic mushrooms, so that's the important part.
Amanita pantherina mushrooms are found, according to Wikipedia: “throughout Europe, western Asia” and also possibly introduced accidentally to “South Africa”. So these mushrooms are clearly not as widespread as Amanita muscaria, but Amanita muscaria also has many varieties that are close but not identical; such as Amanita var guessowii and Amanita persicina. With the latter two being noticeably less potent, perhaps about ½ as strong as Amanita muscaria and only ⅓ as strong as Amanita pantherina. Now of course these are rough estimations, as many mushroom enthusiasts and experts alike will say that wild mushroom potency will vary from region to region, and season to season.
So these mushrooms are not only very potent, but actually quite unpredictable in every sense of the term. To further complicate things, these mushrooms can not be cultivated indoors (at least not yet), as they form a symbiotic relationship with specific plants and connect to the roots of said plants in a beneficial relationship for both. So in order to experiment with these mushrooms, if that's what you desire, you'd have to be in one of those locations and go mushroom hunting during the correct time of the season, or order them from the most reputable site you can find, either or. So I know I discussed briefly the muscimol contents, but even still it's hard to determine dosage based purely off of that, right? So I will break this complex situation down a bit further in closing.
Let's put it this way, in order to prove these are the strongest magic mushrooms in the world, I will use this analogy; so when I consume psilocybin mushrooms, I typically will aim for about 2g of dried mushrooms, and this is usually a mixture of caps and stems (knowing the caps are more potent). This “2g” number usually puts me right where I need to be for an intense, roughly 8-12 hour psychedelic trip. But for Amanita pantherina, if you ate 2g of those mushrooms you might be in for a bad time and some possible trouble. Now there aren't too many trip reports of people consuming large amounts of these mushrooms, although a bit more research can be found for Amanita muscaria dosage.
Many people measure their dose by the dried weight of the mushrooms, and not the psychedelic compounds themselves. Usually these measurements are conducted by the milligram [mg] and for those who aren't familiar, 1mg is 1/1000 of a gram. So many of the gummies distributors sell roughly 350mg per gummy, so roughly ⅓ of a gram of Amanita muscaria (keep in mind this is not the stronger Amanita pantherina). Usually 2 gummies seem to provide the string psychedelic effects, but with a catch however. Muscimol (again the psychedelic compound in Amanita muscaria and pantherina) is synergistic with cannabinoids, more specifically Delta-9. This means that when combined, these drugs are much stronger than when consumed individually. I go into very great detail on this topic in my new book that I will leave a link to below titled “The Link Between Amanita muscaria and Marijuana”.
In the book I cover some absolutely fascinating information that proves this synergistic relationship, and in turn further dispelled the myth that these mushrooms aren't “magic” that many pissed off consumers now claim after being recommended these mushrooms and not enjoying the “trip” and in many cases feeling ripped off all together. But those who pay close attention, may notice the similarities between those who enjoyed the experience, and those who didn't or seemingly lacked an experience. This is 100% due those who didn't enjoy them, not experiencing the gummies combined with Delta-9 or other cannabinoids. In the book I cited plenty of studies and documented a ton of research into this topic, with it being the only book in the world to do so that I'm aware of.
So that being said, if one were to consume the new Amanita muscaria gummies (that are specifically combined with Delta-9) then only roughly 700mg of Amanita muscaria would be necessary for a trip that's in many ways similar to a psilocybin or LSD experience. But of course the amount of cannabinoids also plays a major role, with I believe the dosage mg for that is roughly 15mg-50mg. So 700mg of Amanita muscaria, which is roughly ⅔ of a gram, or ⅔ of an average sized Amanita muscaria cap is sufficient. But if Amanita pantherina is twice as strong, at least, you'd likely only need ⅓ of a gram combined with say 30mg of Delta-9 or similar cannabinoids. Well, on Reddit I think it was I saw a report of someone who ate 4g dried of Amanita pantherina, which is anywhere from 8-16 times stronger than an average dose. It was a very long, detailed report but what I toll away from it was he was basically playing with fire. A quite dangerous experiment.
Well, it wasn't long after that I witnessed that type.of madness in person. I ordered a bulk order of Amanita muscaria and Amanita pantherina mushrooms, along with a shit ton of Delta-8 gummies (I wanted Delta-9 but these were on a 75% sale). I was going to combine the gummies with the dried mushrooms, dosing more-or-less how the manufacturers make the gummies. Long story short, someone I know who didn't quite understand the dangers of these mushrooms, saw them (because I left them out like an idiot) at my home (*I do not have kids and they were sealed) and decided to eat, and I quote “two big handfuls”. Well shit, just how much is two big handfuls? I guess many factors at play there, including hand size and mushroom size amongst others. But then I thought I'd just weigh the bag, considering of Amanita pantherina it was a 10g package. I could tell immediately a large amount was visibly gone, but I never expected 4.1g to be gone…
My heart sank, I felt scared and nervous for the person who ate it (I will leave the name anonymous). The person said they felt “very weird” and added that they “just needed to lay down”. I didn't like that idea of going to sleep like that, but there wasn't much I could do the person ate too much and was now sick. They went to sleep and I waited patiently and nervously, and several hours later they emerged from the room and had puke all over their face and the first thing they said, and I kid you not, was “I had the strangest dream, and I met God”. Long pause which resulted in laughter by me, which I did not intentionally do, “don't laugh” they said, “I'm serious it was the most real dream I've ever had. I talked with God, I know with absolute certainty”. I didn't argue, but I watched their body language carefully for many hours until I was sure the person was alright.
They became a bit upset with me, and they even suggested that I throw those mushrooms away and they aren't good and they aren't the right ones and this and that. At that point, explaining Amanita poisoning was too complex for the person who just spent the better part of 6 hours violently getting sick. So, instead I simply suggested that these mushrooms and that person weren't a great fit, and let bygones be bygones. No harm done, thankfully, but many lessons learned. Do not eat 4g of Amanita pantherina, and I would say do not eat 3g or even 2g. If, and only if you did proper research and feel that you'd like to experiment with these mushrooms, then and only then would I recommend starting off at about 0.5g of Amanita pantherina (combined with Delta-9 for best effects) or 1g of Amanita muscaria, or 2g of Amanita var guessowii and so on. But of course, this information can and likely will change as we better cone to understand these mushrooms. Thanks a lot for reading, and if any of this interests you, then please consider purchasing my new book that just came out this month on Amazon (currently #1 new release for medical drug guides).
